Farnese Palace

Palazzo Farnese

Built for the “great cardinal” Alessandro Farnese on the foundations of a pre-existing fortress, the building (1559-1575) has been celebrated throughout the ages and is considered the masterpiece of Jacopo Barozzi da Vignola. This structure, a tangible symbol of power, combines the functions of fortress, palace and villa. Featuring a pentagonal floor plan with a central round courtyard, it houses a magnificent spiral staircase and a cycle of frescoes that are among the most representative of Mannerism.

At the back, it features two secret gardens and, higher up, an additional place of delight nestled in the woods, with a series of fountains accompanying a mansion, formerly the summer residence of President of the Republic Luigi Einaudi.
